Urbanization Needs a Gender Reset

More than 2.2 billion people—54% of the global urban population—live in Asian cities. By 2050, this number is expected to grow by another 1.2 billion. Cities already generate over 80% of global GDP, making them critical engines of economic growth. Done right, urbanization can lift millions out of poverty.
Cities4Women project in Nepal is leading the way in gender-responsive urbanization. Beyond policy change, this initiative fosters community engagement, ensuring women actively shape the future of their cities. Because when women are included in urban planning and design, cities become safer, more efficient, and more equitable for everyone.
Across Asia, UNOPS' gender-focused initiatives are turning the tide on urban inequalities and If urbanization is to truly be a force for good, it must work for everyone.
